How can you recognize real silk?

“Silk” is probably the most confusing textile. Terms like “ice silk” or imitation silk or artificial silk are not real silk and do not have the benefits of silk.

Some high-quality cotton can give a “silky feeling” because it is not yet silk and cannot be compared to silk.

Probably the easiest way – the price:

Real silk is more expensive than the fake. Good quality has its price. If the price is too cheap, there is no silk. No dealer in the world would sell real silk too cheaply. Rather the opposite.
But what is the asking price for the high-quality real silk?
Based on today's calculation (2022) with raw materials, production, transport, taxes and operating costs, you can make a few examples:

A good silk blanket filled with 100% long mulberry silk (135 × 200 cm) for summer should cost between €200 and €300. The all-season blanket in this size costs between €300 and €400. With some luxury providers they cost more. But this also includes other factors such as the fire.

It can be more or less. But the price under €100 just doesn't have much to do with mulberry silk .
A silk pillowcase measuring 40 × 80 cm in 19 mm mulberry silk costs €60 to €100. If it's too cheap, there are hoes.

The other way would be textile labeling:

Terms like “ice silk” or imitation silk or artificial silk are not silk. They are usually polyester. Reputable manufacturers specify the material composition.

There are also some methods to identify silk by its appearance, smell or by burning it. However, we consider them difficult. Firstly, they often only apply to pure silk. They do not apply to silk blend fabrics. Secondly, textile technology is so advanced these days that it is difficult even for experts to recognize silk. Third, they are often difficult to implement.

It is better to buy from trustworthy suppliers with a money-back guarantee. It's probably not the cheapest. But you will enjoy the silk for a long time.
